Astro Boy es un reconocido y popular manga japonés creado e ilustrado por Osamu Tezuka3 desde 1952 a 1968. El protagonista es un poderoso androide diseñado por el jefe del Ministerio de Ciencia, el Doctor Tenma. Éste creó a Astro para reemplazar a su hijo Tobio (Atom en japonés), quien falleció en un accidente automovilístico. Tenma incorporó en Astro las memorias de Tobio y procedió a tratarlo como si fuera el verdadero. Sin embargo, el Dr. Tenma pronto se da cuenta de que el pequeño androide no podía llenar el vacío de su hijo, especialmente teniendo en cuenta que Astro no puede crecer ni expresar la estética humana.

Tenma incorporated the memories of Tobio into Astro and proceeded to treat him as if he were the real one.
